I started out pureeing and freezing food for my baby. But then I went back to work, and started using jar food more to supplement the homemade food.

I live in Japan and have found that the jar food is quite different. It is very smooth until the 8 month period, when it starts to introduce more chunks of vegetables and rice.

At that time, from about 8 months, I started using a combination of jar food and table food.

I guess I quit using jar food in stages as he ate more and more table foods, so that by around 14 months, he was not really eating jar food anymore.

Although, at 18 months now, I still occasionally give him jar food if he's sick or not feeling well.

If you do it like I did, you don't EVER have to buy baby food in jars. The only time I ever used jarred baby food was when we were traveling, which wasn't that often.

All other times, I made his food. How you ask? I'd steam his veggies and then puree them in a food processor. As he got older, he would just get whatever we were having. If it needed to be mashed, I mashed it. I like to think that my little guy (almost 4) loves veggies so much because he's been getting the real thing from the very beginning. He will finish all his veggies before anything else. And fruit his is favorite snack in the whole world!

Trust your instincts and you will know the right time. Every child is different, so it's hard to give you a definite age, but it's usually around one year.

I stopped buying jar food after my second child. I have four children now. I only feed them from the table now, as when they are ready for table food, it's the perfect time to introduce any food. I think people rush solid foods too soon anyway.

Anyway, probably at about 18 months when the baby is eating regular foods on his/her own.

The jar food isn't really all that great for them (most of it has a ton of crap in it!) and frankly, it doesn't taste very good. Our son was eating jar baby food for only a few weeks before we moved him to regular food (mashed up, of course).

You can buy a food mill (11.99 on Amazon.com) and start giving him the foods you eat. We thought it would be WAY more work, but it isn't. You can grind WHATEVER you are eating for dinner in two seconds - easier and better for your little one.

We never fed him those "toddler meals" because they're awful and full of sodium. We did continue to buy the chopped up veggies & fruits because they were convenient, but I quickly realized that they cost ten times more because they're packaged in tiny jars.

I quit feeding my son jar food at around 10-11 months. He started eating whatever we eat at home. As soon as your child has 4-8 teeth, they are ready to eat real food.

As soon as the baby begins to get teeth you can start introducing "toddler foods." Gerber makes an excellent line of toddler foods that even babies without teeth are able to eat. My favorite thing to introduce is the biter bisquits. They're really hard cookies that the baby slobber on and make soft enough to eat. Plus, they fit perfectly into baby's hands! So to answer your question, the age varries with each baby. I would say as soon as they're able to pick things up you can start introducing things like Cheerios, crackers, and some of the toddler foods. Hope this helps!

We did either jarred food or homemade pureed foods from about 6-9 mos. By 9 mos all three of mine ate table food.

After they have chewing figured out. Test them out on soft solids and see how they do. They've probably been practicing on cheerios...although those can be somewhat dissolved in the mouth. We did soft solids and jar foods at the same time for a while.

When they eat enough table food. Ages vary, and everyone is different.
I waited until I had a variety of foods my child could eat, it was a little later than some because she was late in getting teeth.
