Because they are happy and content.. Sometimes they purr to sooth themselves, like at the vet.
anyway they have us trained. We like the purr sound so we will pet them and tell them they are good cats to hear it. "I haven't been up on the sofa and brushed today. I think I'll purr at her. Start the motor."

Your cat could be in pain,or maybe she likes the Vet sometimes a cat will purr while in pain. You should ask the Vet, as he or she will know better than we as the Vet has seen your cat. I once had a cat who's name was Scrapper(he fought the other kittens in the litter)Who purred so much that I thought that his purr box was broken LOL but he was a very happy cat, I sure do miss him.

Cats purr for a few reasons. The most obvious answer is because they are content. One exact opposite reason is because they may be anxious or not feeling well. It's a natural "inner" response to calm themselves or relax, sort of a self-heal remedy.
Kittens start purring when they are "feeding" off their mothers. Adult cats when they are petted or when among other cats to show they aren't being aggressive / they're friendly and don't feel threatened.

Cats purr when they are content, but also to comfort themselves. Your cat may be nervous at the vet, which would explain the loud purring.

Mine only purrs when he's happy - and he sounds like the "coo" of a pigeon.
