Parables employed by Jesus use fictitious persons as the characters. The goal of this parable is a teaching about God's attitude toward man. In this parable, the son is any sinful man; the Father represents God. Man ran away from God referencing back to Adam's sin, but God has never given up on man, because of His unfailing love. After a time people begin to realize the futility of their life and return to their Father; who is waiting for the return of the son. The son is in no way construed to be Jesus. The gist of the story is, God is always ready to receive anybody who realizes their need of forgiveness and reconciliation to God. He welcomes everybody with open arms of love.

Neither the father nor the son are named, in order for us to insert ourselves into the "son" role. The father represents God.

Peace.

EDIT: Jay Z, I am unable to confirm your answer. If you'd like a GREAT explanation of how the original Jewish audience would have received this parable, go here:

There are several key factors in this parable that are greatly misunderstood by a gentile audience. So it will probably surprise many to know that BOTH sons represent sinners.

This parable was well known to scholars before Jesus told it. So, there are no names used. Jesus told this parable within the hearing of the scribes and Pharisees, who had "heard it a million times", so they probably were smiling to one another until Jesus said, ' "I will go home to my father and say, "Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired man." '
They may have looked at each other and said to each other, he doesn't know how to tell the story! For this is what the father says to the son in the parable, "Get out of here! You are no longer my son! You have no more inheritance!
But Jesus said, "'Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger, and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening in the pen. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.' So the party began.

So, fill in the name with yours! The Father waits eagerly for your response.

It wasn't mentioned. Parables are stories used to get a message across. Perhaps these people didn't even exist, but Jesus used it as a point to help others see that even though someone has left the faith, there is always hope that they can come back.

Their names aren't important. This parable is meant to show us that even if we do wander away from God that He will take us back and this is the only time that a Jewish father runs toward His child and so God will run to us if we will return to Him.

Abraham had two sons... which things are an allegory: Gal 4.

Of two Enochs mentioned, one was "not found" = lost.
For he was taken(in a fault) by the God he walked with.
Perhaps he did the law walk about, not the grace walk.

Of two sons in Luke 15, one was lost(dead), but is found(alive);
so then rejoice that 2/2 are alive(found) and none are lost(dead).

And if 1/100 sheep which was lost, is notably also found in Luke 15; then 100/100 sheep are found(alive) and none lost(dead).

So then, what son, or what sheep, are many saying are still lost, if 2/2 sons are found(alive), and 100/100 sheep are found(alive); found alive in Christ: the end of the law, the Saviour of the world?

Perhaps it is only the Son of man who's still looking for, seeking for, the lost(dead), that are notably all found(alive). And perhaps it is the Son of man who "should repent" in Numbers 23:19; Especially if he would come again, bring again, Noah-ic and Sodom-ic destruction to them all, both scape-goats and dumb-sheep he divided left and right in such law law heavens on high.

Don't ppl recovering from getting "high", to the point of harming themselves and others with such law law, afterward speak of a "higher" power to "help" them get over(above) such law law?

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
