I have a 2001 Ranger with 118,000 miles. I have never (*knock on wood*) had it in the shop. Ford makes awesome trucks. But i'm sure the 92-96 is a little different from a 2001. I never owned a foreign vehicle so i can't help ya there.

THE FORD RANGER HAS HAD FOME FUEL PUMP AND EMISSION ISSUES
DIFFERENCE IS, MOST ALL PARTS ARE AVAILABLE FROM AFTERMARKET SOURCES AS OPPOSED TO THE NISSAN WHICH IS MANY TIMES LIMITED TO THE DEALERSHIPS $$$$$$$$$
WE HAVE 35 TRUCKS WHERE I WORK
A COUPLE TOYOTAS, NISSANS AND MAZDAS
WE STARTED GOING STRICTLY WITH THE RANGERS
ANY TRUCK WILL WEAR OUT BRAKES AND SHOCKS AND NEED TUNE UPS
IT IS THE OTHER STUFF THAT GETS YOU
ON THE IMPORTS
WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE OVERALL COST OF REPAIRS ON THE FORDS TO BE LESS DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE CAN EASILY GET PARTS
THESE TRUCKS ARE DRIVEN HARD ALL DAY AS DELIVERY TRUCKS FOR AN AUTOOMOTIVE PARTS SUPPLY WAREHOUSE
ALL IN TOWN TRAFFIC
SINCE YOU WILL NOT BE DRIVING LIKE THAT I BET YOUR FORD WOULD LAST YOU QUITE WELL
I WOULD BE HAPPIER WITH THE 3.0 OR 4.0 ENGINES THAN THE LITTLE 2.3 4 POPPER

I have a 96' 3.L 4x4 Ranger, bought new. Things that I know about the 2 trucks. Ranger new was cheaper and had more options for same price. Ranger does not due well in snowbelt, rusted out tailgate, leaf spring bracket broke due to rust and all brake lines replaced due to rust through. But they are one tough truck and other than some annoyances I am happy with the purchase. My mech said, the rust issues I had were minor compared to frames rusting out on Nissans of same time.

I had a 1992 ranger and I drove it 180k and still had the original clutch and never had major repairs except for a new timing belt installed.
The 2.3 4 cylinder is a bit low on power, but gets the job done. If you get a 4Liter V6 model, you'll have power to spare. Note that the 1992 model is an older body style and they were redesigned in 1993.

i was in exact same situation just like you a couple years ago. I brought a used Ranger and it gave me problems. I'm ex-car mechanic so fixing wasn't a problem. A few years later I got a full size Bronco and giving Ford another chance but results were the same with problems. Now I got myself a Nissan truck and that thing been a charm but I decided to get a new nissan truck.

I think Ford has the advantage between those two. The cost of parts are less, Mazda and Ford share parts on the ranger.
Nissan may be good too, but Look at all the Fords out there!

ford - cheaper labor rate if it does happen to break down, imports are too expensive to maintain. peolpe say toyotas and nissans never break down but...go to a nissan or toyota dealership and look in the service department - it's always full of vehicles. people overpay for imports and the break down the same as domestics. good luck.

Not sure about that particular year but I have a '96 B2300/Ranger that has 160,000 miles and runs like a top. Mind you it's very minimalist. The only option it has is A/C. It doesn't even have power steering.
I love it!
