The bathroom is the obvious choice. It is also good training for a new kitten; it certainly worked on my Stimpy. OR you can go to catsclaw.com and get a kit to train cats to use the toilet.

The laundry room. The main thing is to make sure the kitty knows where the box is and try not to move it around, Find a spot and leave it there. The cat might be confused if not and have accidents.

As for smelling the box. I have a covered box. I buy five bags of cheap kitty liter at the dollar store. I change my cat box every day to every other day.. There are plenty of expensive kitty litter that promises to keep the smell down. There are also very expensive scoopable. Yuck it does not control the smell and I do not like to scoop the poop!

I take a big garbage bag and empty the cat box in it. Oh yes use cat box liners. These help the smell too. Plus baking soda is very helpful. Keep a small hand held broom and dust pan next to the box for clean up. You will also need an outside garage can with a seal tight lid.

If you do not have a laundry room, basement or garage. I suggest the bathroom a place with hard flooring and no carpet. Just try to keep it away from the shower or tub.

We have ours in the second bathroom inside the bathtub. We don't use that bathroom.

The box does not smell if you clean it enough and use the right litter. Clumping litter is the best. We use "Arm & Hammer" Multiple Cat deodorized litter.

A garage is the worst place to put a litter box. The cat can get hurt in there.

In my personal experience, the best litter is one of the cheapest on the market. I go to Walmart and get the Special Kitty brand in the yellow bag. Its around $4 and it deodorizes REALLY well... I leave my litter box in the bathroom. I think that's the most sanitary place to leave it. As for the not covering thing, I have yet to run into that issue. All of my cats have been good abour it. Try scooping twice a day. Also, part of the smell problem could be that he is peeing on the floor. Try cleaning the area around the box onc e or twice daily as well. Use either one of the products that get rid of urine odor or a solution of water and vinegar. The vinegar is going to make him more unlikely to pee in that spot again. Also, try to contact a behaviorist and see if they can help. Best of luck!

I saw this thing on TV where a guy took a side table (one that had doors in the front) and cut a cat sized hole in the side and put the litter box inside. When he needed to clean or change it, he just opened the doors. The cat used its 'secret' entrance and no one knew a litter box was there because they all thought it was just a regular table. You could use a chest or small chest of drawers (remove the top drawer and glue/nail the drawer front to the furniture. Keep the box in the bottom drawer. etc...

I find it easier to use unscent clumping litter, because the cats have senestive nose, they can smell 100 X than humans. Place the litter anywhere as long it is in a quiet area (no high traffic). I find it easier if I place it either in spare bathroom or in the laundry room since my basement is finished (rec room). the important thing is don't change cat litter all the time and stick with one brand. (cats will know the difference). I use cat Maxx multi by Purina. (clean the litterbox daily).

It won't hurt if you add baking soda (arm & hummer brand), it will absorb the stinky smell. and cats don't mind it.

I have three cats and two litter boxes. I keep one in the laundry room and one in the shower of the spare bathroom (it's really easy to clean up around it; you just rinse and down the drain it goes). The best way to keep up with the smell is to use scoopable litter and scoop it everyday.

It shouldn't matter because if it is kept clean you won't have to worry about odor at all. Use a clumping litter so you can scoop it out between changes and also Arm&Hammer makes a deodorizer for litter boxes that is fantastic. I use a little each time I scoop the litter.

We have ours under the laundry tub in the laundry room. If you can leave the door ajar, the broom closet is a good place, too. Get a covered litter box and use clumping cat litter (we use Premium Choice...unscented and self-absorbing), and clean it out every day and you should not have odor. Good luck fellow cat lover!

Bathroom

If you can get him to use a covered pan they work great in not letting the smell go throughout the room. Just don't forget to clean it on a regular basis.

Also use a good cat litter with odor control.

In the laundry room.

If you use a good litter (I love Fresh Step Scoop) and clean it out frequently there is NO reason that it should smell

I had 3 cats and 2 litterboxes and people never even knew it. I cleaned out the boxes twice a day, morning and night (my kitties are quite spoiled and I cleaned them out frequently moreso for them than for me).
