If you have to ask you shouldn't get one.
The only acceptable reason for a tattoo, is to get one that means something. Asking strangers on the net is a dangerous approach.

If you are serious about getting a tattoo then you should not need other people's advice on what to get. Tats are a very personal and permanent thing and they should really mean something to you. Dn't rely on what other like...it is your body and YOU will have to live with it for the rest of your life.
If you are serious though then I would suggest taking the time to decide for yourself what it is you really want and where you want it. If you can draw it yourself that would be best or have someone draw it for you. The tats that are on display in the shop are called flash and anyone can get those so your tat will not be unique. There could be 100 people out there with the same one.
Think really hard about this and go with what you feel is right for you! Good Luck to you.

I have several tattoo's, my most recent being my family coat-of-arms on my chest (which is NOT the best place to get your first one, believe me!)
Firstly, choose a design thats timeless, as it where. Many of my friends have tattoos of passing fads and they now look ridiculous or regret them, so choose carefully. Tribal designs and symbols are popular, as are animals. Spend some time in your local tattoo palours and get a feel for whats available. I found with some of mine a design just jumped out from the ones available and I went for it. I tend to shy away from writing/scrollwork for the simple reason that there the ones you can regret the most.
Secondly, choose a place for it. A good first place could be the bicep or upper arm/shoulder. These area's are nice and fleshly, so the pain isnt so bad, plus these area's are easily hidden if you want to keep you tattoo's out of sight for job interviews and the like.
Thirdly, yes it does hurt, but not as much as people make out. Its more of a scrathing irritation.
Finally, its better to regret getting a tattoo than regret NOT getting a tattoo.
Good luck and enjoy, theres nothing quite like your first tattoo!

I'm getting my tattoo next week, i am getting a small pink orchid in a tribal pattern on the base of my back. i have been planning this for a long time!! what i did to decide was visit lots of websites from a google search and look at windows live spaces where people have posted pics of tattoos and eventually found one i liked. the guy at the shop has now modified it to my liking so its unique to me. i chose the bottom of my back as it can be covered, i always wanted one on my shoulder blade however since going to a friends wedding and seeing how it looks with a strapless wedding dress i have decided against that place! hope you decide!!!

I personally have not got any tattoo's but a very good friend of mine has a shop here in Weymouth & he always recomends that the first one should be on a very fleshy part of the body & somewhere that it can be easily covered for weddings etc, i.e. top of the arm, he also likes to sit down with potential clients and discuss likes & dislikes & then shows them pictures of tattoos to choose from, a reputable tattooist will do this, so go to the shop and see what they have to offer.

You MUST get something that reflects you.
Maybe your zodiac symbol, or a cross or barbed wire. But these are common ones.
My buddie got two on his back. On the left is an angel, like a cartoonish one, and on the right is the exact cartoon in the avatar of a devil.
You could also get something cute like a cartoon.
Places for tattoos could be
Lower back, for a small one.
Shoulder blade
inner arm
ankles are GREAT for girls
back of the neck (ouch!)
Remember, putting on and losing excessive weight could alter your tattoo so place it somewhere where skin doesnt alter too much with weight. (like back of the neck, and lower back).
GoodLuck!

I've been wanting to get a tattoo for months now, I already have 2 but this one will mean something to me as it will include my 3 childrens 1st initial, give it some thought, look through some tattoo mags, go into some tattoo parlours, have a look on their walls, you need to get one you like & remember it's there for life!

A good one
If money is an issue then don't bother. Get the design absolutely right and think about it some more
Once done you can't just rub it out with an erazer so be sure that design is exactly what you want. FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
Think hard and think again time and time over again

I've got a small plain black butterfly on my ankle. Not many people have them there so i think its quite an unusual place. Also it wasn't very painful. When choosing a tattoo design make sure its something you really like and are not going to get bored of. Make sure you are 100% sure so you don't regret it. Also, go for black if possible because colours fade terribly.

Ankle (anything you want), or centre of your lower back (only if it's symmetrical). If you can draw something yourself and get to a decent tattoo parlour, then you'll be in business. Just remember, the whole point of getting one is that it's yours for life. Don't rush into getting loads of complex colours, with multiple sittings. And, no matter what anyone says, it DOES hurt!!!
