We adopted a child 2.5 years ago at age 8. Our child has a need to rock back and forth, not at bed time but through out the day by swinging or rocking (quite hard at times) in a rocking chair. Our child has been diagnosed with FAE and ADHD. Is this behavior a symptom of her diagnosed condition(s) or is there something else that rocking is filling a need for?

If she's behaving this way in a rocking chair it seems she's chosen the appropriate action for said piece of furniture.

I'd be more concered if she were violently rocking while sitting in other chairs.

Its probably a comforting thing to her. And yes, it does sound like it goes hand in hand with her mentioned ailments.

Part of the FAE. Many people with FAE have sensory integration disorder which causes them to have trouble coping with stimuli in their surroundings. Loud noises, too many people around, too many instructions at once, touching things that they don't like to touchstrong smells, etc can all set off a person with SID. Many form coping mechanisms like rocking to make themselves feel better and help get through times that they can't cope with. There are things that can be done to decrease SID behaviors. Brushing (get brush from occupational therapist), use weighted blankets, encourage playing with playdough and gak. good luck with your daughter.

It's probably a comfort thing and if the child wasn't comforted at all before you got her maybe she's making up for lost time now.

well my daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD and to my knowledge theres nothing wrong with the rocking. my daughter uses it as a means to calm down, when iam able to sit with her i will rock her myself. every child isw different so please consult your daughters doctor. good luck!!!
