"Bush Signs Terror Interrogation Law", AP Breaking News, October 17, 2006

"WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush signed legislation Tuesday authorizing tough interrogation of terror suspects and smoothing the way for trials before military commissions, calling it a 'vital tool' in the war against terrorism ... With the bill I'm about to sign, the men our intelligence officials believe orchestrated the murder of nearly 3,000 innocent people will face justice," Bush said. A coalition of religious groups staged a protest against the bill outside the White House, shouting "Bush is the terrorist" and "Torture is a crime." About 15 of the protesters, standing in a light rain, refused orders to move. Police arrested them one by one."

Back when the bill of rights was passed, I'm sure the neocons of the day were saying, "What! You want to protect the rights of murderers and thieves!?" Luckily for us, the founding fathers ignored them and passed our constitutional safeguards anyway.

Today's neocons are saying, "What! You want to protect the rights of terrorists!?" Uh, no, I don't want to protect the rights of terrorists, I want to protect the rights of *innocent* people who are *accused* of being terrorists. Bi-i-i-i-g difference!

This latest legislation allows the president to declare anyone he wants an "enemy combatant", detain him indefinitely without trial or access to a lawyer, torture him to get whatever confession he wants, and then use that confession in a military tribunal, along with evidence that the defendant has no right to see. If this were happening in any other nation, we'd be talking about gross violations of human rights, kangaroo courts and so forth.

Even if you trust Bush to use these powers wisely, are you sure you can trust the next president? Or the one after that, the one after that, and the one after that? Once laws like these are on the books, it's just a matter of time before some politician finds it expedient to abuse them. Already today, we have right wing nuts saying that anyone who disagrees with Bush should be locked up for supporting terrorists.

Never forget that the greatest threat to *any* nation comes from its *own* government. The US of A is no exception to that rule.

It should worry everyone. He has essentially authorized torture. To top that off, the patriot act authorized that anyone can be taken without question on "suspect of being or helping a terrorist", and held for an indefinent period of time without trial. So, now our government can abduct anyone they want and then torture them. Torture does not produce the truth, it just gets the person to say what the torturer wants them to say to stop the pain.

Everyone should be worried about this. Watch out for Big Brother.

It's the thin end of the wedge. Israel authorised tougher interrogation methods and ended up with human rights violations and torture being enacted on suspects as a matter of routine. The same will happen in the US.

Hon, i'm a follower of Christ's teachings and that i assure you that i'm no longer a instantly fee ticket Republican. i'm certainly no longer a die-demanding Bush fan both. Your observations of the organic procedure "reason and result" because it pertains to each and every of the Bush administrations differences to our united states seem spot on. i replaced into horrified when I heard Bush say, "if you're actually not for us, then you actually are adversarial to us." I knew at that very second that our Professed Christian in workplace replaced into serving his personal agenda and not in any respect that of Christ's. This new regulation presents Bush (And any destiny President---so vote properly) the prospect to take to a sparkling element, that well known quote of his in that if all of us voices an opposing opinion, no count number how large or how small... they could be able to now be whisked away and not in any respect heard of back. we are in the top of the top situations. might want to God provide us grace with which to face for the right and not in any respect be basically followers of those who profess rightness.

The AP press release makes me wonder who it was that made up "the coalition of religious groups." That's pretty vague, but it's not a surprise.

If people of any faith have nothing to hide, then why should such a bill cause them to worry?

Someplace along the way, personal "rights" must meet majority rule, which is what constitutes a democracy.

So is the president decided bamboo shoots under the nails works, that is OK, puppy? After all, he is the deshider.

It will not matter if you are christian, just having a conscience will make it bother you. If you happen to be a christian this is just added hypocrisy to agree with this policy.

I'll stop now before I am declared an enemy combatant and skirted away to to the depths of the unknown for an unspecified number of years.

I think you missed this bit:

"The bill forbids treatment of detainees that would constitute war crimes - such as torture, rape and biological experiments - but gives the president the authority to decide which other techniques interrogators can use."

But yeah, the fact that the President can accuse anyone as a terrorist without cause and then skip the legals in order to interrogate them is in breach of human rights.

Kjelstad - No, bamboo shoots under fingernails would be classed as torture. Be realistic please.

not at all because christ said things would get worse before the second coming so he has prepared the true christians for what is to come by telling them ahead of time.

spend a little time in matthew and you will see what he says about the end times

the most interesting part about it is when he talks about the end times are the first words out of his mouth.
"let no man decieve you"
