The Metropolitan Railway opened the world's first underground railway on 10 January 1863 between Paddington (Bishop's Road) and Farringdon Street.
It was built dirtectly under the Marylebone Road, and caused a significant amount of disruption to London at the time, but once opened, relieved a great deal of congestion on the road above.

Farringdon; 10 January 1863, although, strictly speaking, it was the Metropolitan Railway. London Underground came along much later!

The first underground station and service ran between Shoreditch and Whitechapel and used steam trains. It was later extended under the Thames to connect with New Cross via Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks. It was around 1880.
