Any time, really, is a good time to go to Hawaii! But you'll get hit with the highest prices if you try and fly around the holidays (Christmas/New Year's) or Spring Break, when the college kids hit Hawaii. The weather's always warm and mild there, so it doesn't really matter if you go in the summer or the winter. But I like to go home (to Hawaii) in the fall or winter 'cause the warmth of Hawaii feels even better when you're coming from a cold place!
It takes maybe five hours to fly there (nonstop). If you connect in another city (e.g., San Diego to San Francisco, San Francisco to Honolulu), it'll take longer. Oh, and there's a 2-3 hour time difference between California and Hawaii, depending on what time of the year you fly (because California observes Daylight Savings Time and Hawaii doesn't).
What kind of vacation are you looking for? For a good mix of city life and attractions and nature, I'd choose Oahu for your first trip. If you have a lot of time, you can island hop to Maui or the Big Island (Hawaii). Oahu has a lot more to offer in terms of nightlife and superb restaurants compared to the other islands, and it also has nice beaches, tourist attractions, etc. Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island are better if you want more natural attractions (waterfalls, volcanoes, etc.) Have fun!

Hawaii is good to visit during the Summer months between April to October as the rest of the time is its raining season. Unfortunately, Hawaii has jsut been hot by a minor earthquake but this is minor and the islands have responded quickly to allow tourists to enjoy their vacations.
