this happens all the time in my town,in the summer with the a/c on,same in the winter with the heater,with the cost of gas,if all cops turned their cars off and dealt with a little discomfert we could save millions

i ride a bike everyplace i go,and the police station is in between my house and work,i see this every day,and its all cars not just the ones with pooches in em,if there are any enviromentalists that want to cause a stink the city is 'Lafayette,In.'

By leaving a car running, it keeps the patrol vehicle's battery charged, because there are several electronic components that run off the battery. The car has to run to keep the alternator (which is also a generator of sorts) charging the battery, that is hooked up to the radios and the lights.

Then there's the aspect of if you leave the car running you know it's running. The same with leaving the shotgun and sidearm loaded you know it's loaded and you don't have to worry about it.

I am a police officer and I am not sure exactly why we do it. I can think of two reason why I do it: I think it would be less wear and tear on parts and the engine stuff since we get in and out all the time. I also think it keeps the car ready to go if you need to go in a hurry.

I am from Lafayette and you are right, the cops there sucks and are lazy. I call the Lafayette's Swinest! (cause you know how they always say Lafayette's finest!) but its bullshit
