Well if you are going to cross the Irish Sea - the Royal County Down in Northern Ireland is considered one of the best links courses in the world. WorldGolfs review here: http://www.worldgolf.com/course-reviews/ireland/royal-county-down.htm
and there are plenty other reviews online.
It's not cheap, or easy, but if you make the trip over the Irish Sea, I recommend you also check out the course at Ardglass for a less expensive but also challenging links course in a beautiful location.

Not too far from the North West of England, hop across the border and try three great courses - Caernarfonshire (Conwy) Golf Club which was used for Final Qualifying for this years open championship, Royal St Davids in Harlech (used for top Amateur events each year) and Aberdyfi - the best greens anywhere. Once you have tried them visit the 27 holes at Nefyn - outstanding golf and amazing views.

Carnoustie and Turnberry are two of the more famous ones in Scotland. The former is NE Scotland so pretty far away. The latter is SW Scotland, nearer but expensive.
SW Scotland's Ayrshire coast has an abundance of Links courses, some accessible through the local council. Look at the websites for North and South Ayshire councils for details.

Although it is a fair way from the northwest, do yourself a favour and play at Saunton Golf Club in North Devon near Ilfracombe. Two great links courses, both a great challenge. Just down the road there is The Royal North Devon Golf Club at Westwood Ho! which is near Bideford. You will not be disappointed.

Not sure about the UK, but two of the best links courses in the world are in south-west Ireland: Waterville and Ballybunion, both regularly played by world class professionals
