I don't think that anywhere in the world a child should be left alone until they are at least into their teens!!

There are no actual statutes that I could find about that.
The only statute I found in Rhode Island was in regards to leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle. The age for that is 7 and older.
The center for missing and exploited children suggested not to leave them home under the age of 10.
In any case, you can call your local probate office, who should have a copy of the codes (specifically infants and incompetents) and it should have something listed if THERE IS a statute, which I don't think there is.
In Alabama, there is no set age, it is based upon the maturity and ability of the child.
I have left my 10 year old alone for 3 hours or less very infrequently, but he is now nearly 12 and I wouldn't have a problem leaving him all day as he is VERY mature. Straight A student and knows how to change diapers, took cpr classes with us and knows what to do in an emergency.
Some people would be appalled at this, but it depends on your family situation. Not every child is an only child who is coddled and spoiled. Even before I had my other 3 children, my son was very mature, because I taught him to be independent as a future man.
You know your kid better than anyone. Just make sure he knows how to call the police, has at least one neighbor contact or close relative nearby OR your beeper or cell phone number.
Good Luck.

Regardless of ANY law- the parents or parent should have THE FINAL say so. They have the child's best interests at heart( hopefully) and they KNOW the child better than any law. Trust is also a factor. So....
I am not sure the legal age- but to me the formula is
Trust+maturity+sensibility(of the parent)= staying home alone.
Always should of course have all emergency numbers readily available just in case. A neighbor or someone close to the family also could be on call to handle questions or problems not necessarily deemed an emergency....

I wouldn't do it until their teens, you may think they are old or responsibly but you never know when you are gone they might need or want something high and fall or try and make something to eat even if you tell them not to, or leave on their own, or a stranger could come and see they are alone and do something, cause even if you tell them not to do that stuff they are bound to do at least one.
