The only effective deterrent against earthquakes was undertaken by the United States Government back in the early 70s. The government implemented a secret plan to eliminate pogo-sticks. Seen one around lately? Do you even know what one looks like? When I was a wee nipper, fifty years ago, seems like all us kids had one, And then almost overnight, they disappeared. The Earth's crust was taking quite a beating when you have 15 million kids all jumping up and down right after school. It created a situation even more dangerous than climate change. Now you can't find one even at Walmart. And the government plan worked. We dodged the Big One of 1978 that would have split California off into the Pacific. So don't buy a pogo-stick, even if you can find one. They may even be illegal in California.

can't avoid earth quakes though can you? Or i think you meant what should you do to avoid getting hurt in an earthquake.
Well firstly, if it's too risky to evacuate out of the building, i heard somewhere that you gotta get on your hands and knees immediately and crawl under a table or something that will prevent things from falling on you like the ceiling.

You can't avoid an earthquake, the earth shifts constantly. If you are caught in one, stand in a doorway or get away from buildings and overpasses.

To avoid an ACTUAL quake..You must move out of the region..Really...
BUT, to prepare for one...Contact one of the Agencies for the "Recommended Procedures" and follow THAT.
Quickly though, get out of the building. If you are stuck in one-- stay away from windows, remove sharp objects, corners and archways are stronger. Basements are very supportive..............
Good Luck!!!!
