well in regards to the planets they're two of the most visible objects in the night and late evening sky which is why they were given such important symbolism. Mars is red in colour which is the same as blood and so was attributed to war, and men as well because we are the ones that go to war. Venus in the evening sky is attributed to lovers and women as a partner to Mars.
As astrologial symbols go the two for Mars and Venus are the same as for male and female. Mars is a circle with an arrow coming out, symbolising male genitalia. Venus is a circle atop a cross, and i'm not sure how it evolved but I do know it was originally supposed to represent teh female body also.

A lot of anyone's views on gender equality are going to come from their culture. In my own traditional culture, and my faith, women and men are indeed completely equal. There are not any specific gender roles outside those dictated by simple biology. Each member of the household does the job and takes the role for which they are best suited. This is why from time to time they'll find a very old grave and there will be a woman buried there surrounded by all of her weapons and her husband buried at her feet with his sewing kit. In such cases the woman was the better provider, so she provided for her family while her husband stayed home and cared for the farm, livestock, any children and kept order in the basic supplies. It's things like this, combined with my culture and the general fierceness of the womenfolk in my own family, that make me feel that women and men are indeed equal. However, each individual's strengths and weaknesses must be taken into account and they should do whatever it is they are best at rather than simply fall back on either stereotypical gender roles or even push for an equality that doesn't exist in cases where one partner is truly much weaker than the other.

I have heard that the mars/venus symbology stems from ancient times either egyptian or greek, i think egyptian where the female symbol represents a mirror/hairbrush (handheld) and the male symbol represents a shield and spear. this is the truth as i have heard it.

The LIFEFORCE has 2 aspects we understand as the
MASCULINE and FEMININE. Flowing from God, and back
to God.
The masculine is said to start within the Earth and flow out.
The feminine comes from outside to Earth.
Also, the masuline flows from within the Sun.
And the feminine from outside the solar system to the Sun.
Mars symbolizes the male aspect flowing outward.
Venus the feminine flowing inward.

It's the Western (or one of them) version of the male/female balance. The Chinese have this with Yin/Yang, the Qabalah has it with Chokmah/Binah...it's old symbolism held by many many cultures, and this one has simply become the predominant version in the West.
