My pooch was neutered yesterday, and he's NOT adjusting the the cone collar he has to wear for the next 10 days. Does this fear get better over time, and is there anything I can do to help? He can't take it off, or he could tear the stiches out.

I just dealt with this with my collie. You should know that he will eventually learn to get around well with the collar on. It took my logan three days. His sister Katie who got spayed at the same time got along much easier, but she had a smaller collar.

I had to help my little drama king to get up the stairs to get into the house and to jump up on the bed. If he caught it on a corner of a cabinet he would become "stuck until I released him. It was so sad. But he did finally figure out he could power through and actually get around.

The people on the colliel list recommended a "Bite Not collar" which they had purchased from www.jefferspet.com. It is more like a stiff collar to go around the neck to prevent the dog from turning his head around toward the stitches.

Someone else recommended asking the vet for an orthopedic neck brace. It's like the foam thing they give you when you get whiplash. They said its a little more expensive than the e collar, but their dog tolerated it better.

Don't worry. If you don't want to try either of those options, then just give him a couple of days. He'll play it up a lot, but he will eventually figure it out. And he may not have to wear it for the whole ten days. I called the vet at about six days and was told they could take the e-collars off.

I've had dogs for over 30 years. I've done rescue for 5 years. No dog has ever had to wear a cone collar that I have had.
Try letting the dog go without the collar while you can be with him. If he leaves his stitches only, then he doesn't need it.

You know, I feel sorry for dogs when they have to wear the cone collars. It is for his own good and he is going to be miserable for 10 days. He may settle down a little with the collar, he may not.

I wish I could give you more, but in truth the dog is just going to have to wear it.

Good Luck and Take Care

Go here for an awesome dog training program http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?8PRl

Since it is obvious that you do not have a clue about obedience training, your services should be for free. You cannot train even an adult dog for 8 hours a day. About the most that can be done at any one time is 10 - 20 minutes and that is with an adult dog and not a puppy. The attention span on this baby is extremely short and training session should be no more than 10 minutes and twice a day. Additionally, there isn t going to be much learned if you will only be training for 5 days. Obedience training is cumulative and is done over a much longer period of at least several weeks to several months.
What you can charge is determined by your experience, reputation, and accomplishments and in a case like this, should also include guaranteed expectations. Just working with dogs over several years, is not the experience that is necessary to be a dog trainer. There are too many people who are putting that title to their name and fleecing the public. Don t be one of them.

There are a couple things you can do. You can try boxer shorts, those can work well if you turn them around so the tail sticks out the hole (and they are the right size of course :-) ) Make sure that he does well in those before you leave him home alone without supervision. You can try some bitter apple spray and spray that around the incision (not on it). Or just take the cone off while you are able to closely supervise and put it back on when you are not.

I recommend calling your vet and seeing what else they recommend, most definately. This is pretty common. They do not have to wear it if you are watching them to make sure they can't get at their stitches.. but they are fast so you have to REALLY watch him. I know the vet I worked for didn't use stitches for neuters

Its just like anything new he will get used to it. This is something he isnt used to seeing when he opens his eyes and it probably drives him nuts. He is probably also starting to heal which is making in itchy. Think about how you would feel if you had and itch and couldnt scratch it. And think about how you would feel if someone couldnt explain to you why you couldnt. He will be fine, its only for 10 days.
