It could be angioedema, I get this quite alot, especially on my lips and around my eye, and yes it does look like a black eye. When it happens to me it is usually just under the eye, feels quite hot and is itchy and tender.
It could be an allergic reaction to something, I also get red wheals (urticaria) all over my body, but nobody has been able to figure out what causes it. It can be caused by medication, common causes are NSAID, such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen. Or it could be food or chemicla related.
Mine usually clear up within a day or so, but I often get a few episodes in close succession. You could try taking an over the counter anti-histamine such as Piriton, this may reduce the swelling and itching, and if this works you will have a good idea that it is a reaction. However, this didn't work well for me and I have been on strong anti-histamines ever since.
If you want any more information on angioedema, or want to compare any pictures to your eye try these links:

If you think that this might be the reason for your black eye then I would advise seeing your GP. They may prescribe medication to control it, and they may also decide to take some blood to see if allergy markers are present. If you experience any more swelling, particulary if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing then request an out of hours doctors appointment, or go to A&E.
I hope you find the information you need, best wishes, Mel.

It occasionally happens that a small blood vessel bursts at night either because you have unwittingly rubbed your eye in your sleep or your blood pressure is up. When you wake up in the morning it looks dreadful, but it usually clears within a few days. If it does not, then go to your doctor. Have your blood pressure checked just in case too.
If you had a sinus infection you would be in real pain, and you do say it does not hurt,so it is unlikely.

Hi Hannah,
My son woke up with one a few months back, it was all red on the inside too. I took him to the doctor and he had an infection in his eye, which caused swelling, which also in turn caused bruising. He was on antibiotics for 10 days. Hope that helped.

yes, could be sinuses or that u bumped into something last night. but the sinus cavity does run underneath ur eye so if they are swollen ur face/eyes will appear swollen and possibly bruised
