Of course in a perfect world where everyone had a big enough house or apartment, boys and girls would have separate bedrooms. but many families live in one or two bedroom apartments/houses where it's impossible to do this. Many, many families in every state live in crowded conditions where boys and girls share bedrooms. It is not credible that Rhode Island state authorities are going around checking on this when there are so many other more severe child abuse and neglect issues to be investigated.

Now if you're talking about taking in foster children or adopting children, it's a different story. The social workers who screen families wanting adoptive or foster children would most likely require that children be in "same sex" bedrooms.

I think regardless of where you live that boys and girls should have separate bedrooms once they reach 5-6 years old.

Whether its mandatory or not the safe bet it to have different sleeping quarters. Being a parent is a responsibility you have to respect when having children of opposite genders. You hear a lot of stories so you don't want to be in a position to have one of your own, especially from your kids.

Whether it is or not, rest assured that no police are going door to door to check in on the living situations of your children.
