It's fairly possible that males began organized religion (think Abraham, the first Jew/monotheist), but that may not be a reason.
In English, we have a gender-neutral pronoun, "It." The first monotheistic (One-God) religion was Judaism, and in Hebrew, there is no gender-neutral pronoun. Their choices were "he" and "she" and in a male-dominated society, it was probably assumed that God was male.

depends on the religion too i am sure since if you look around you may find a female goddess religion that worshipped a Venus as god and not a man. there are religions that have both aspects male and female in them. christianity was made by man to control mankind so if you want look up the egyptian religions they also worshipped females and males as equals never one over the other.
islam, christianity and judiasm all follow a man made idea and belief.

Because most religions were invented a long time ago, when sexism was rampant in society. In those days, women were second class citizens, so when "gods" were invented, they were obviously going to be made in a male image - after all, women were weak, helpless and not smart enough to think for themselves - who would follow a god like that?

Because most of the major religions are patriarchal, and the English language is gender specific. If we had a gender ambiguous word for God, then we would use it. Translations and semantics all come into play here.

i asked the preacher (Christian) this same Q once because i found it kinda offensive when i heard some peeps call God "She".
He said God is a being and doesn't have a gender so he, she whatever you wanna call Him is irrelevant. He explained that during the times the bible was written, women weren't held in the esteem that men were so God is written about as a man because in that time, no one would have believed a word if it was coming from a woman. same reason why He sent His "Son" instead of "Daughter"
made sense to me

The Bible refers to God as He. He made Adam first and then Eve. God created man in "his" own image. It says that in Genesis. Get a life and quit trying to stay on the contrary.

Well, it's relatively simple actually. See, all religions are a reflection of a sexist society. The thing is, God HAS no sex. It's just that the men, in order to show God's dominance, decided to call God a "He". I call God a He/It.
And the reason that ancient civilizations felt that God needed some sort of title is because they couldn't comprehend Him/It. After all, God's name isn't actually God. That's just His/Its title.

Language translation barrier.
Muslims believe that God does not have a specific gender and in Arabic there is a word to refer to this but not in English so I guess we have to settle for 'He'.

look for a book called secrets of the wolrd, it helped me find so many answers yet left me with so many more questions. there is actual proof in what he writes, you have to be ready for it mind you. god is referd to as he because the makings of a baby is male, then it evolves to either male or female, god is you, me and every one on this planet. . .

because in the past, religion was a good route for men who weren't tough enough to be warriors, clever enough to be traders, or skilled enough to be craftsmen to get ahead in life at the expense of others.
Although, thinking about it, plenty of religions of the past (and Hinduism today) had powerful female goddesses, Aphrodite, Venus, Hekate, Kali, Diana, Demeter etc.
