Aint this wasting their talents? this sportsmen are representing their country and isnt this national service too? well if this continues, singapore would not have a large scale of sportsman representing singapore by the mid 20s.

I can see the need for a military in any country but I am not a big fan of forced military service. Male athletes usually hit their peak at around 24 or so. I don't know how long your military requires them to stay enlisted but I would think that even losing those years as practice for their sport would be detrimental to their later abilities. I also don't know your countries policy for changing a law. Maybe an exception should be made for Olympic athletes?

It is not too difficult to get an exemption from national service in Singapore. I'm sure that top-notch athletes are exempted, or allowed to concentrate on athletics during the time of their national service.
National service in Singapore is a remnant of the days when Indonesia and Malaysia posed a credible military threat to S'pore, and the military had to be built quickly to counter that threat. S'pore's military now is, man for man, the best in Southeast Asia.

If your country is important to you then you should not object to being asked to help protect it. But , the means to fight an enemy requires a strong physical body and an active responsive mind. that lets out people who have aged beyond 45 yrs of life,...and that leaves the role of soldier to the young people.

Compulsory service in one of the four military services is something that we should give deep thought to. We know that there are countries out there who would like to defeat us and, if we refuse to serve our country, we will surely lose it to the invaders.

If we lose a war, everything that we now hold dear will be gone. We will lose the right to speak, to freely assemble, to do as we please, to have a religion of our choice and all of the other benefits of a free person.

Is your freedom and that of your family not worth a few years of military training?

I think it would do the pondlife living on most British estates a great deal of good to build a few roads! if they are great sportsmen of the future then i hardly think national service should deter them. My brother played squash for England and now he's in the RAF flying helicopters.
