I can't pick on tradition because there is no "best answer." I'm putting this one up for a vote--best of luck to everyone!

Ever since I was little, we did Noche Buena (dad's side of the family is from Cuba). Pretty much, the family gets together Christmas Eve and has big dinner (looks like Thanksgiving) and then at midnight, we have a cake for Jesus and sing happy birthday to him.

When I was little I thought it was the stupidest thing in the world to sing happy birthday to Jesus and actually have a cake. Now that I have a son, I definitely want to continue on with this tradition.

Also, my mom and my dad always fought over the whole Santa Claus issue. My dad won and I was told about the whole story of St. Nicholas and how he became known as Santa and all that, but I was never told that some guy comes down the chimney when Im sleeping, and only if Im good, to give me presents. I was told the presents were to celebrate Jesus.

Anyway, I will be doing the same for my sons first Christmas this year. My fiance thought the birthday thing was awesome.

Although my kids are now 16,13, and 8 year old twins, Santa still comes to our house and probably always will. The only presents under the tree till Christmas Eve are the ones we buy for each other and the others in our lives. On Christmas Eve , Santa comes from the chimney or the door in the last house we had and leaves "magic snow footprints" ( my hubbies huge boots dipped in water and then baking soda, it is cold and goes away within a few min). My kids still love it although the older ones know there is no Santa.

Christmas has become so commercilazed and people seem to forget the true meaning of the holilday, But literally for as long as I can remember, my grandmother reads the Chistmas story out of the bible and says prayer before any presents are opened. She said they did this even when she was a child and lived during the depression, even if they only got an orange, they were thankfull and honored the true meaming of the day. When we do open presents, we take turns, only 1 person at a time opens a gift so the others can see what it is and you can say thank you to the giver. Blessings

My hubby and I celebrate one of his family's traditions called "Kris Kringle" that has been going on for about 20 years. After Halloween, we all pick out a name out of a hat and that is the person you buy a special gift for the occassion. A couple of weeks before Christmas, we all get to together for the Kris Kringle dinner, read some Christmas cards, everyone does a little speech about the year, everyone lights one candle, and then we exchange the gifts. It's a very nice tradition, better than Christmas for us!

The kids and I make homemade candy and cookies and sweets together all through the month of December.
Homemade fudge
Butterfinger bars
White Trash
Oreo Bark
Sugar cookies that we ice and decorate

We decorate the tree together around the 1st of December.

We go to the Children's Museum and go down the Yule slide (2 story slide) and visit Santa there to tell him what they wish for and to get their picture take. It just so happens that Daddy built the chair that Santa sits in. :-)

On Christmas Eve they get a new pair of PJ's and a new, nice hardbound book from Mom and Dad. They get dressed in their new PJ's, hang stockings and put out treats for Santa, and we read their new books before bedtime.

On Christmas morning, their stockings have been filled by Santa and he has left them (usually) 3 presents (1 for each Wise Man). There is always at least one new Christmas ornament in their stocking too, so they'll have a nice collection of ornaments when they are grown.

How could a simple question like this get a thumbs down?

Anyways, we go to my dads on Christmas Eve. So that everyone gets to enjoy seeing the reaction of peoples faces when they open the gift that they bought for that person, we all only open one gift at a time and all take turns.

On Christmas day, it varies, since we have to split the day between my mother and my husbands family.

we used to prepare for christmas decorating our house starting the first day of dec and so on..we usually prepare special gifts based on individual's personalities then put it at the bottom of christmas tree w/c are just opened at the night of noche buena, a tradition influenced by spanish or specifically 24th midnight or 25th at 12 am...

every night nearing the 25th, we form a group then sing christmas carols to friends and family members every night. most of the times, they give us a gift or money for doing that... :)

at the night of noche buena, we set our tables full of delicacies and our family make a feast celebrating the birth of Jesus and the spirit of family get together. We talk about the blessings we all have had and the happiness and the experiences we have had all thoughout the year.
on the morning of christmas, we have prepared something like food or small gifts to give at children knocking at our doors and greeting us a merry christmas until noon and evening. we have abundance of food in the house and everybody is happy welcoming friends and family who drops by!

We always decorate the tree together on 12-12. Each kid gets and ornament with their name and the year on it and they can use special markers to draw whatever they want on it. The youngest gets to put the star on the top of the tree. And lastly, on Christmas eve, before we go to church, we always have lasagna, and when we get home, the kids exchange their gifts to each other (all other presents are for christmas morning).
