She's right a memo or a flyer is the the best bet. If it's something your company is doing for needy families a memo explaining what you would be providing and requesting if anyone knows of a needy family to let you know is best. If it's something you are doing outside of work for a church for example, then you may want to do a flyer being careful not to solicit employees into feeling obiligated to participate. In either case, a wonderful idea to help those in need.

Just ask them! Point blank.."We are asking people to nominate needy families to help them out for thanksgiving, if you want to be anonymous just put a piece of paper with the families name on it on my desk." End of story!

Let them know that the company would like to make thanksgiving baskets to hand out to families in need in your community. Would they know anyone?

Send out a memo, then provide a box in a not very public place to get anonymous nominations.

My personal take on asking employees to donate to something at work is that it is unethical.

Often when asked to do something like this employees feel trapped into complying. While doing such a thing is noble it is unfair to the employees. They usually comply but with resentment.

Think very carefully before you proceed with this.

A perky mass email? Don't make it sound like they *have* to. And mention that no names will be mentioned when the family gets the gift baskets. Everything will be confidential.

And it's a wonderful idea, kudos to you.

Put a memo in with their paychecks or posted by the time clock. If it's a small company, have a meeting with all and ask. What a nice thing to do!
