What causes the pain? How do you avoid them and/or get rid of them?

A stitch in your sid comes because you diapram is bouncing around. Its held up there by these little tendons. So, when you run, it starts jerking around. Try putting your hand under you rib cages and pushing up. This will manually pick up the diaphram. Or, lean to the opposite side. So, if you get a stitch on the left, lean to the right, with your left arm in the air, as if you were stretching. Hope it works.
