Flying is a lot cheaper
3000 miles NYC to San Francisco - 3 days and 2 nights on the road
3000 miles @ 25mpg = 120 gallons of gas @ $2.50 per/ gal.=$300
2 nights in hotels @ $ 50 per night= $100
Food @ $30 per day x 3days =$ 90
Actual out of pocket cost $ 490.00 x 2 = $ 980.00
the cost doesn't take in to account pre-trip vehicle maintenance, on the road repairs or higher fuel prices, nor does it take into account depreciation of the value of the vehicle.
United Airlines 21day advance purchase $338.60 round trip
14 day advance purchase $ 458.60
Lv JFK 6:25 a.m. Arr SFO 10:00 a.m.
Even if you add in the cost of renting a car -A Taurus from Hertz @ $ 270 per week - it's still cheaper to fly
I think that everyone should drive across America at least once in their lives But cost is not the reason

If you travel alone or as a couple, flying is cheaper especially with low-cost airlines, 3 or more driving becomes cheaper. In all cases, driving is more fun.

It is always cheaper to drive as long as you do not stay in hotels over night. From New York to California in lest than 3 days, plus the views are wonderful, take a drive you will enjoy it.

It depends on your reasons. If your time equals money, then you should fly. If you want an adventure, then i'd hitchhike too. If you're brave enough. If you drive in a motorcycle it should be a lot cheaper than either car or plane.

Flying will be cheaper and faster. Gas/tolls/wear&tear for the car would cost alot.

well if its only 1 person travelling then flying is way cheaper.
its only cost effective to drive if its a handful of people.
take into account time wasted by driving, and one would have to sleep somewhere on the way, which adds up to the cost, also take into account the wear and tear on the car.i am also pro flying as its safer

if you're going to cross the whole country you better fly. I don't know what is cheaper, but it sure saves a hell of a lot of time.

Drove from Buffalo to Sacramento and from Ohio to LA and back. Driving just to get there is tiring , expensive and fraught with risks. Driving to see the country; no contest!
