buddhism--very peaceful people

2006-10-18 02:38:53 · answer #1 · answered by peggy 2 · 5 2

A religion or any belief does not bring love or compassion and tolerance into the world at all...only people with true love and compassion willing to help others have done this and it is not the religion that does it, it is in the hearts of all mankind and it is up to them to use it to help and comfort others with it. Look at a wild animal taking in an abandoned animal pup or kitten, which religion showed them how to do this ? Sometimes I see more compassion at the zoo than on a subway or a bus, some jerks do not even give up a seat to the elderly now, and they sit there on their sabbath at their church of choice rattling off how good they are.

Buddhism in its founding was all about compassion and tolerance and has remained so for 500 years longer than Christianity has been in existence. Also Buddhists simply seek enlightenment while many Christians are busy depriving non-believers entrance to a heaven Buddhists aren't the least concerned about.

They have both brought love to this world. Love is not something that can be measured quantatively...

Randy G: Most Japanese are followers of Shinto, not Buddhism. Kamikaze attacks were inspired by the Shinto myth of the Kamikaze, or divine wind. World war two was inspired by the belief that the Shinto goddess Ameterasu promised the world to the Japanese. Sorry, no Buddhism involved there. As for China, the martial arts taught were not to be used in a destructive way. They were meant for two people who fought not to harm each other but rather to enter the state of "No-mind".

Good question. It's almost certainly Buddhism, probably by a wide margin, though both religions have done plenty.

Buddhism does have a clear advantage in avoiding the dark side of religion, though.

I take it that you are implying that Christian nations have made many wars (because there are many of us), while the peaceful Buddhists have passively done nothing wrong to anyone. These comparisons are always bogus. Have you forgotten WWII? "Peaceful" Buddhist Japan raping and pillaging all over the Pacific? Humans are violent irregardless of their religious beliefs (that is why we have religion in the first place - there has to be a counter balance to humankind's violent nature).

======edit====
In reply to "Mirage", with respect, even if you assume that there is a clear distinction between Shinto and traditional Buddhism, it does not change my point that ALL humans are inherently violent irregardless of their religious beliefs.

Many people have tried to blame Christianity for the various wars carried out by "Christian" countries. Most Christians would complain that wars of conquest were carried out by people who were not "real" Christians because they violated the teachings of the Christ -- but this argument is always rejected. In order to be fair, then one would also have to blame Buddhism for the wars carried out in Buddhist countries (and that nerve gas attack in the Tokyo subway by that crazy Buddhist messiah). If you argument is that these Buddhists were not "real" Buddhists, they were lead astray by Shinto practices and were corrupted, then how come this same argument does not work for Christianity?

Let's play fair -- no double standards.

from the "Encyclopedia of Religion and War"
...In East Asia, Mahayana Buddhism elaborated doctrines that served as a basis for war. In China, for example, the belief in a future Buddha led to various rebellions to secure the survival of peasant communities, and Buddhist millenarian cults periodically rebelled against the ruling dynasty. In Japan, Mahayana Buddhism accepted the samurai warrior and set the stage for political insurrection and a number of violent confrontations among competing sects.

Buddhism, since it has a very simple rule which is:

"Do not hurt any other living things"

Also Buddhist are not suppose judge other people, they are just suppose to peaceful and harmless beings. Can't say the same for Christians.

That's why Buddhist are vegetarians too, because eating meat is hurting animals. They have great respect for all living things, unlike christianity where in the old testament, God even ask them to do animal sacrifices.

examine Bart Ehrman books and you will see that the bible is composed of texts that have been extra by utilising unknown people who weren't stimulated by utilising GOD. many human beings till finally on the instant will quote a number of those verses as they have been the words of GOD. as an occasion the tale of the female that become taken to Jesus for adultery. what number human beings pay attention the word "solid the 1st stone" guess what that may not area of the bible and it become a later addition. If there's a single verse interior the bible become extra in and human beings use it as though it become the words of GOD, then how can we believe the different words interior the bible to be the words of GOD? How will all of us know which area is genuine words of GOD from the later additions? How can i believe any teachings based on the bible's words mutually as the words interior the bible are actually not sturdy? stable luck with your checklist, of course you already made the "top" determination. Peace.

tough one... they dominate different parts of the world.

christianity can remove your pain instantly throught the belief of a god being with you, while buddhism, you need time to comprehend the actualy meaning and you can't do it in times when you are emotionally disrupted. comprehension of the text's deep meanings need a calming mind.

so.. christianity gives instantly, while buddhism gives too but it takes time to comprehend.

Well, that's an easy one. However, you'll find that Christians aren't interested in love, compassion, or tolerance. They are interested in who's going to heaven and who's not. They are also interested in who supports their delusion, and who rebels against it.

If someone needs to be put to the sword to show them the "error of their ways", then that doesn't bother them in the least. The same is even more true of the muslims.
