I have been questioning that for years. I decided I just believe in a higher power.

I don't. i have no proof. I only have my faith and my life experiences to Guide me. So far my life has worked out pretty well and i have a feeling of comfort when i speak too God. (My God) I don't have everything i want but it always seems that i get what i need when i need it. It was this way with my mother and now it is this way for me. I do not blindly follow anyone or anything. I have looked back on my life and my decisions and questioned if i would have done this or that how would my life have turned out. You know what? I am right were i am supposed to be right now at this moment. When thinking in terms of how God has helped me even the mundane tasks take on a whole new meaning. Peace too you. I hope you find what you are looking for.

The God I worship wants you to be the best person you can be. My God would never order me to kiss his boot. My God gives everyone a fair chance. All have an equal opportunity under God and with God. My God wants tolerance, love and understanding from everyone and for everyone.
I don't worship a God with a lesser set of standards.

Your heart will tell you.
If you are seeking the One True God, then that One hears your prayers and answers them.
It seems the question implies that the asker believes in more than one god. In that case, you choose whom you wish to follow.
I believe there is One God, and Mohamed is his Prophet. If you accept that there is only one God, you should not worry about this. Christians, Jews, and Moslems for the most part hold that God is omniscient, "All-Knowing." Therefore, the God would hear your prayers and help you to make the connection.
So, don't worry, be happy.

If you live by the Word of God--you are. It is faith that makes you know. When you build a relationship with Christ--not a bunch of rules and traditions--a real relationship filled with friendship and trust and love--you will know that without a shadow of doubt you are worshipping the one true God who created you with a purpose and plan for your life.

If you have reached the spiritual understanding that God is a Higher Power- a Power and not a man in a white cloak as such- you know it to be true and right

When the spirit within you is in communion with God's Spirit, you know.
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
So you should not be like cowering, fearful slaves. You should behave instead like God's very own children, adopted into his family --calling him "Father, dear Father. For his Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are God's children.
