Don't get highlights, they are out of vogue and will make you look dated. Try one of the glaze products that they now sell over the counter. You will be much happier with the results. Or if you really want to dye your hair try Colour Experte, they have a website so that you can figure out whether you need to go cool warm or neutral and will help you pick your shade based on your current hair color. They include highlights and if you put them on sparingly, the results will look great!

I always go for the natural look so I have dark brown hair too and I have red highlights rather low lights. Not red as in fire engine red you can't notice them unless i am under direct sun light but it is cool. I get a lot of compliments on my hair.

Caramel or chestnut brown- it will give some dimension to your hair and enhance it. Very rich and warm!
Blonde or red will be too much IMO- screams highlights...too dramatic- unless of course that the look you are going for! :)
