I am moving into a new home soon and the prior owners had a cat, I'm a little allergic to cats and want to know of ways to help reduce allergy effects and for how long should I anticipate having effects from the cats?

You have a problem and it will take time, energy & money to get rid of it.
First you need to have the entire house vacuumed & vacuumed.
If a hot airsystem and/or AC in house, have the ductwork cleaned professionaly and change or wash all filters in the furnace and AC unit.
Have all carpeting steam cleaned.
If you could do all of the above your new home should be almost free of cat allergens & dander right away.
Note, if basement in new house vacuum and wash that floor and same with attached garage.
Good luck and I hope you do not suffer from your allergies in your new home.

I am incredibly allergic to cats, and recently went through the same problem.

First, shampoo. Shampoo EVERYTHING. Twice.

Second, the baseboards in homes collect lots of dust/dander. I don't recommend doing this yourself if you're very allergic, but having it done really helped a lot.

I would also take Zyrtec (prescription) or another dander-specific allergy medicine (Claritin over the counter is good) for the first couple of weeks as you adjust. The more you are around the cat dander, the more immune you will become to it.

My Jasper used to have a little yellow friend that came out and played with him but the other cats wouldn't allow him to come here and play. They are mean and they ran him off. LOL. Jasper likes to bring me moles. The others like to bring me birds. Purrcy brought a live one into the house last summer. That was fun. Not!
