-- Defrag your system frequently (every 2-4 weeks).
-- Run msconfig from Start-->Run, and choose selective startup, loading only those programs you really need. Don't keep everything for loading at startup.
-- Make sure your virtual RAM is atleast 150% of your physical RAM (i.e., if u have 256 MB RAM, your virtual RAM should be atleast 375 MB). This can be checked in My Computer-->Advanced-->Processor, Virtual memory etc.
-- Un-install all unwanted programmes.
-- Decrease Hardware accelration for games etc.
-- Archive some files to CD/DVD or different hard disk
-- Run SpyBot or similar software to kill all unwanted advertisement programms.
-- Clear cache and History.
-- Run Disk Cleanup.
-- If your system is still slow, try upgrading your RAM and CPU.

In addition to the other excellent answers here, I would suggest you
* Should update your XP operating system to XP-SP2 if you havent already done so. Use IE and choose update from the help/tools menu.
* Should get a good antivirus software such as Symantec or the FREE Antivir and run the virus scanner after updating your virus definitions. I suggest disconnecting from the internet while scanning the drives.
* I would also suggest either using FireFox Mozilla browser for internet browsing or at the very least have anti-spyware such as MS Windows defender and "Spybot search and destroy" installed and turn "innoculate" on.
Always keep your virus and spyware definitions up to date. I update daily.
* Also turn on your XP firewall to make sure any 'malware' does not turn your machine into a zombie. You could also use the free COMODO firewall if you want instead. Keep in mind, the firewall will slow you down a bit so it is basically for safety NOT SPEED.
* Delete all your temporary files using the windows utilities AND temporary internet files using your browser tools
Good luck....

Defragment your hard drives once evry 2-3 weeks. Use CCleaner(www.ccleaner.com) which will remove all the temporary files, unused registry keys, cookies, cache etc. Try to free space on your C: by removing unimportant files or tranferring them to other hard drives. If you have 256 MB, then you should upgrade it to 512 MB because 256 is not enough for internet use. All this should speed up your PC considerably. Good Luck!

Three "popular" steps:
1) Get a anti spyware software, and "clean" your computer with it. Spyware can really slow down your computer's performance.
2) Go into your Start-up Program folder and delete those "shortcuts" which you really don't need to start up every time you boot.
3) Increase your RAM (memory). It often helps to significantly increase your computer speed.

I truthfully have got here across that ninety 5% of the time this has no longer something to do with why your laptop is sluggish. even possibly a a techniques better %. analyzing clusters of the place your information has been written isn't as significant because it was once with the smaller tricky drives.

My first advice is change your antivirus program if you are not using AVG. AVG load much faster during start up. AVG is free!
