I think it's insecurity, which is very strange. Our world could be a much nicer place to be if we'd just attempt to get along and support one another. Open dialogue and even cross-religious events would be fun and would work in the best interest of peace.

Some small minded people, unfortunately, just feel a need to make fun of others period. It can be their religion. It can be their clothes, the way they look, the way they act, the way they smell, the way they fix their hair, where there are from, what they do for a living - just anything at all. Don't expect them to spare your religion just because you consider that sacred.
Do I think it will work? Only if you let them. You can turn them off like a radio and just walk away if they become too obnoxious, or close the door if they are on your doorstep.

I think non-religious people have a mission to prevent religion from over-taking the world. Most people believe in religion due to being motivated by fear. We need to alleviate this fear of being punished for not believing after death, so that these people can think straight again.
Imagine a country with laws govern by only religious laws, Afghanistan is a perfect example, it would be hell.
Honestly, I think people shouldn't be lead by fear, it's just wrong. If I taunt a religious person alot, it is in hope to make that person really think about his beliefs logically and hopefully form logical conclusions about his own religion after that, cuz right now, most religious people are just banking on blind faith and the "do not question" rule.

Making fun of someones religion is not appropriate however neither is pushing your religion on everyone else. If you are Christian and think everyone else is going to hell, remember God said "thou shalt not judge." This is the biggest mistake that all God fearing people make. Believing in God is wonderful but, acting like you are more right and more perfect than everyone else isn't. People make fun of religion mostly because you have silly people going door to door pushing religion on everyone which the bible preaches against that as well. If someone is to make a spectacle out of them self they deserve to be made fun of. Also in the bible it says when you pray go in the closet and shut the door. I really don't think he meant put on a show for other people to see.

I remember hearing the best explanation in a childrens' TV series called "Blossom" in the early 90'ies. The idea was something like this: a belief and a fart are similar in the sense that your own smells just fine while everyone else's is disgusting!

It cuts both ways. You could reverse the parties in your question, ask it again, and it would still be valid. Why do people who believe spend so much time chiding and preaching to people who don't? Do they think it will work?

I know I am trying not to. I like to think I am tolerant of religions, what I don't seem to accept is blatant mockery of a God I adore and have complete faith in. This means the gloves are off, mock my God, I mock your Godless ness. Simple as that.

I can tell you that from what I see, if someone asks a question that is insulting to another you will get a defensive answer. This goes both ways.
