it depends on a couple of factors but most likely it is your tv; that is to say your tv is either too old or you do not have ot set up for the cable you are using, their are three usual ways that you connect to a tv from a dvd player 1,scart 2,a three prong lead (one yellow one red and one white). or 3, an s video lead. in order to tune your tv into the dvd player it must be on the correct "av channel" and if not the tv will show the picture in black and white. if you are using the afore mentioned s video lead and their is a considerable age gap between your dvd player and tv, the tv will not be able to read the signal properly, and you will receive black and white otherwise there is a faulty connection internally

If you're using an SVideo cable, maybe the cable is defective and isn't sending the colour signal (chroma) to the TV. Try a different cable, and a different TV if possible to help narrow down the problem.
If the picture is distorted as well, the player could be set for PAL output instead of NTSC (or vice versa if you're not in North America).
Or it could be set for some other peculiar output mode; go into the configuration menu and verify that it is set for the type of TV and cabling you are using. DVD players can have a wide variety of output options, from normal composite video (RCA) to SVideo, Component Video, RGB, VGA, and Progressive Scan.
