The best painkiller for toothache is Ibuprofen (do not take if you have asthma or stomach problems) It's an anti-inflammatory drug and will help if the nerve of the tooth is affected.
To prevent or draw out any infection rinse your mouth out regularly with warm salt water - the heat draws out infection and the salt sterilises it.(it's better than any bought mouth wash!)
Keep the tooth as clean as possible with your toothbrush - use a fluoride toothpaste and Sensodyne toothpaste may help too.
Floss around the tooth - sometimes pain can come from trapped food / plaque in the gum. If it bleeds - then the gum is inflamed.
Dabbing clove oil on the tooth (not the gum) will help dull pain.
Go to your dentist asap - toothache does not go away - it gets worse.....the longer it's left the harder it becomes to treat also.

Clove oil is a potent essential oil, which has traditionally been used by dentists to relieve pain and fight infection. Today, it is a common ingredient in several over-the-counter toothache medications and a popular home remedy for toothaches. You can get immediate relief from your toothache using a clove oil compress. Here’s how: Step 1 Rinse out your mouth with mouthwash or warm water to get rid of any sugar and food residue. Brush your unaffected teeth as well as the pain allows. Step 2 Make your clove oil compress: Mix 3 drops of pure clove oil with a 1/4 teaspoonful of olive oil. Soak a cotton ball with this mixture. Step 3 Place the clove oil compress against your aching tooth. If it is one of your back teeth, place the compress on the tooth and bite down to hold it in place. Step 4 Leave the clove oil compress in place for as long as possible. The throbbing pain will begin to subside. Step 5 See your dentist. Remember that a toothache is very often a symptom of tooth decay, infection or other dental condition, which requires your dentist’s attention and care.

Anti-Botics for a bacterial infection. Which is causing the pain in the tooth most likely. Call your dentist, Ask him if a round a of antibiotic is worth a shot.

Also Listerine, and equal parts of Hydrogen peroxide and water (tastes awful but works) gargle, and then Ibuprofen.

I find that toothache is because of bacteria getting in through the hole that needs to be filled. Brush thoroughly and use mouthwash and the pain subsides until the bacteria build up again.

You could try paracetamol and codeine, you have to get it over the counter at a pharmacy but you dont need a prescription. I am having terrible wisdom teeth pain, and it's the only thing that helps.

Be careful though, it warns on the packet that you shouldn't take it for more than 3-4 days as it can be addictive. Only use it when you need to.

Good luck.
