Primary treatment is the removal of solids in waste water that will easily settle out by gravity, e.g. large pieces of fecal matter, food, paper. This is done by allowing the water to flow through channels at a low flowrate. In secondary treatment, an active sludge, which contains live microbes, is mixed in with the water. The water is then aerated so that the microbes will eat up all the dissolved organic material. Tertiary treatment is the use of sand filters to remove metallic wastes and may also include disinfection with chlorine or by some other means (such as UV irradiation).

Primary and teriary usually refer to screens that filter the waste water. Primary screens filter out the big stuff and teriaries usually get down to microns.
