It's called microtrauma. It particularly takes place during the eccentric(negative) phase of the movement. This is tearing of the muscle fibers.Individual fibers tear and with proper rest and diet they will mend as two fibers.
This is referred to a delayed onset muscle soreness and in many cases doesn't set in for two days.It has absolutely nothing to do with lactic acid. That's the burn that you feel while performing the exercise and is cleared from the muscle when proper circulation returns.
Reversing from negative to concentric(finishing the rep) will cause even more microtrauma.Supplementing or eating protein and proper rest are the best remedy.Be sure to get SOME protein every 3 hours to retain a positive nitrogen and not undoing what you've just done.
If you're training intensely then train each muscle group only once per week.It takes that long to restore all of the glycogen and heal the microtrauma.

To build muscle you have to tear it. Tiny microscopic tears in the muscle are opened up when you 'work' then, these openings are 'filled in' by more muscle tissue, hence why stronger muscles are bulkier. If you over work a muscle you can do more than the normal working out tear. A good rule of thumb is if it hurts more than 2 days later you did too much. Try more reps with a little lighter weight than you used until it goes away.

When you work out you tear your muscles. The reason muscles build is because you tear them down and then while you are sore they are healing and building back up.

What makes them burn while working out is the lactic acid your muscles release.

Stenuous anaerobic activity (such as weight lifting) causes the body to build up a certain amount of lactic acid in the muscles worked. This is what causes the soreness you feel. It goes away as the acid dissipates.

thats good, its your muscles breaking down, when u lift weights you rmuscles break tear apart, and then they recoup by getting stronger, they basically tear and when you eat it brings protien and other nutrients to your muscles to build them back up

muscles tear when you lift strenuously...then they rebuild bigger (and stronger) each time...that's muscle growth.
