. the musicanship that Harpo and Chico demonstrated was really them?.... or were other musicians playing and they were like "lip synching" the instruments? if it was really them...they were incredible musicans!

The Marx brothers play and sing themselves. I would love to be able to play the piano like that.

All five of the Marx brothers were accomplished musicians. Their mother Minnie made sure of that.The brothers names were Gummo(was on the vaudville stage with them at the start then decided acting wasn't his thing; Groucho, Chico, Harpo and Zeppo.(Zeppo left after the first couple of movies and was their manager for awhile) They did not do lip synching to the music back then. The music scenes were done with just a few takes. Did anyone know that in real life Harpo could really talk. His muteness was just an act.

The Marx Brothers were fantastic musicians, with the exception being Groucho. They did play their own instruments, Groucho did lip-synch a lot of the songs he sang. By the way, I am happy someone finally asked a question about my all-time favorite comedic performers! Thank you!!

I'm OLD,,, Old enough to have been here when all of them were still alive.
It was/is ACTING!!!!!!!!!
They were who they were, long before we Knew who they were, and they found a niche, a market for the evolution they wanted.
They were intelligent, talented individuals, who happend to choose "SHtick" as opposed to other formats in the genre.
Example: Victor Borge.... check him out.

They are competent musicians.
During the filming of the movie they are "synching", but to their own recordings.

Believe it or not, they REALLY WERE musicians as well as accomlished vaudville performers.
