take off and landing is the critical phase for a flight. aircraft has what we call a integrated drive generator as the engine spins it drives the generator. lights in the cabin are switched off because if an engine fails the generator on the other engine can supply power to the critical systems suppored by the failed engine and stops the extra load which is put on by non essential items i.e cabin lights, coffee maker,oven etc.

To preserve power, I think as during takeoff, lot of power is required.
