My dog was diagnosed with mild liver failure a couple of yrs ago (she's 13 now), and refused to eat hills cd, so the vets were happy for her to stay on her usual diet.

A couple of weeks ago, she became reluctant to eat, a few days later she collapsed for a few seconds. The vets werent sure if she had a splenic tumour, it was enlarged and her abdomen was tender, they wanted to open her up but said if it was cancer they wouldnt bring her around from the anaesthetic. I was (obviously) reluctant for this, her ALT blood was elevated but not as high as on diagnosis of liver failure. They gave her a steroid injection, started oxycare antibiotics and zentonil. Her appetite picked up and on a re-visit the spleen was normal size and her abdomen was non tender. Initially she would only eat chicken and potatoes then i was able to introduce dog food similar to ceasars, she wont eat usual food, then she stopped eating that, now will only eat chicken the vets say there is nothing they can do

My dog died from liver failure at the age of 15 last year. I know you don't want to hear this, but I think you should start thinking of putting the dog down. He will just get worse and you really don;t want him to suffer. The vet's right, they can't do anything, his age is against him also. It is us who suffers from their loss. Show your dog you love him so much that you will not let him suffer. He will love you for it, I promise. He will sleep peacefully. No pain again. I'm sorry for your loss to come.

I would say that at the age of 13 and with all of her problems she has earned the right to eat chicken .this may be the only thing that does not hurt to eat remember mom she hurts ..steroids increase the appetite ten fold so that may be why she ate then and does not want it now.. I know this is not what you want to hear but it just may be time... you love your dog please consider putting her to sleep ... you can be right there when she goes comfortably.. opposed to painfully and alone not to mention you coming home and finding her... peacefully you will be prepared and inside you know it is the right thing to do in your head but it is your heart that has to come around to the idea..... if only we could do this to humans who suffer I have cancer myself right now I am okay but one day I won't be maybe by then the human race can see a need for the end to suffering we can not hold on forever spend some time with your dear old friend and what ever decision you should make ..make sure it is the right one for both of you good luck and god bless...

I am so sorry for you. If this were my dog, I'd be thinking it was time to let go and the kindest thing to do is put your beloved friend to sleep. I'm surprised you didn't say that is what your vet as recommended.

Time to let her go if she is in pain and won't eat.
