I have a slipped disc and the usual connected sciatic pains and am awaiting a scan. In the last 24 hours my left thigh muscle has started visibly twitching every second or so and it is quite irritating. Is this a normal symptom?

Yes it is. I have a pinched sciatic nerve too and I sometimes get muscle spasms in my left leg. I do hope the doctors can help you, it is very very painful.

Yes, sciatica is a symptom of disc herniation. I had a double-disc herniation (slipped disc) for over a year and physical therapy, even chiroproctor sessions, did not improve my symptoms significantly. I had a spinal surgery 3 weeks ago and my symptoms have since decreased. Yes, symptoms include twitchings, muscle spasms, sharp pains and/or numbness depending on the nerve being impinged by the herniation. The most common is L4-L5 level, but it can affect even the upper discs. MRI is more sensitive and specific than CTScan in the diagnosis.

Sciatica Muscle Twitching

Twithching is not a normal symptom. Are you tired? Too much standing? It might be hamstring tightness. The muscles in the leg might be tight. If you are on prolonged standing or walking, rest your leg by raising it in the wall while lying down for at least 15 minutes. It will help in the circulation of the blood.
Slipped disc usually presents with low back pain and sciatic pains are pain noted over the distribution of the sciatic nerve which is one of the largest nerve in the thigh area.

It's possible. If your disk is impinging the sciatic nerve (as you said) it can cause twitching in your leg. I know from experience this can happen. I ruptured a disk and it caused damage in the sciatic nerve. I have numbness, pain and twitching in my right leg. It may however be a coincidence too and the twitching could just be a muscle spasm that will go away eventually. Good luck to you, back pain is horrible and I hope you get the medical care you need to be of help.

Yes it can be a symptom of the slipped disc, but a twitching leg when resting or sleeping can also be caused from lack of iron.

yes - what happens is the disc can partially slip and swell up - this stops the disc from slipping back into place.

while it is out of place it can press against nerves - this causes the pain and the twitching.

you need to rest, rest, rest - for a coupld of weeks so that the iritation to the disc stops and the swelling goes down - only this way will it slip back into place and all will be OK again.

Thanks

I cured my sciatica with this natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

Not with my sciatica. It's always possible, but it is most likely a potassium deficit. Try eating a banana or kiwi, or even some strawberries if you do not want to take a potassium suppliment (tho if you are in pain the way I am when it acts up, the vitamin would be your best bet, I hate eating when I am in pain)
