I am not asking this question to be fascetious or belittling; I just want to know why everytime I take a whiff of a Muslim, I feel like barfing. It is an odd mixture of spices, body odor, and something that is straight-up funky. I know the spices in their food are pungent, but this should not justify their odors (my heritage has pungent spices too but I keep it in the kitchen). I especially smell this stench on muslim women from Africa. What is the deal?

For all of those who have vehemently responded to my question, please refrain from doing so, as I do not intend to put anyone down. I am asking this question because I am genuinely interested, and slightly concerned, about the hygiene that has been strangely coupled with the cultures that practice this religion (ergo the reason this site was created).

It is amazing me how much people can get too far stereotypical. You are talking about one fifth of world population man. How many muslims you met? from what country? how many non-muslims you smelled from same country to say it is because of their religion. Spice eating muslims are only the Asians while African, European muslims are not. I am not sure what is the reason of the smell you mentioned but if it was because of the spice as you think, remember that Thailand, Philipnies and Vietnam are not muslims but they eat same spice used by their muslim neighbors.. so it has nothing to do with being a muslim.

Yes, it's true. I've experienced it myself. On some it's not that obvious but there are others too who smell just fine. But frankly speaking, not only muslims have that kind of odor but people who belong to other races/religions, too. The bottomline is it all depends on ones own personal hygiene.

the people who believe in Islam are muslims. how they smell got nothing to do with their religion i bet. you can be a white muslim, or black muslim. if you're talking about their food pungent then you shouldnt have thought that it is because of the religion, it is more about the region where they live and the food they have in the region.

hi,living with Muslims,i have to admit that you are totally wrong!first those people with spicy odors are not all Muslims,i assume they are the Muslims from India,its very logic as their food contains alot of spices!secondly for the one who answered that Muslims don't bathe or bathe with their ropes on,its totally wrong, since Muslims pray five times a day,their religions confirms on the idea of washing the face ,hand,feet,mouth ,head,etc.. before every pray,its kind of respect to GOD,you have to be clean when you pray,besides Muslims,have to was always wash ad bathe,its in their religion for example,when a woman finishes her period she has to have a bathe,and there are many examples that prove so,and as a Muslim myself,i use perfumes,deodorants,soaps,shower gels and also my facial soap,so Muslims are clean and i assume that there is no religion that calls for its people being dirty!?am i right?

Islam (Muslim) is a religion...
When you smell that odor it is most likely exactly how you described it. I mostly smell the odor on men in the country i live in. I have been told, although not by any of the sources of this odor, that they bathe with their robes on and do not use deoderant. However, i am friends with many muslims who smell just fine. Maybe it is just a matter of personal hygiene with specific people.

Never been close to a muslim i dont know were u live but were i live theres not many muslim walking around, strange cause i live in LA but never really crost paths with a muslim i have but never conversation wise.

I always thought it was the hot spicy curries they ate and the smell sweated out from their skins..I'm not sure ALL Muslims smell that way though..but i've come across quite a few that do
;-)...I used to go to a supermarket in town where the majority of staff were Asian (no of fence now before u get on your high horses!!) i stopped going there because of the Body odour from some of them, it put me off my food! in a health and hygienic place it is NOT the place to smell!

Go smell your own armpit. I know of Americans who gives out an odor that can knock a coyote out feet up.
Smell huh! Since when did a muslim have a smell that you yokels don't. Go find a nice padded room and have someone lock you in and throw away the key. That way you will always have a whiff of yourself and call it heavenly!

yes, but the one I dated several years ago was probably the cleanest person I ever met! I think it depends on the individual.

i have a friend that's a winner at a beauty pageant...she smells good, beautiful, smart and is good in broadcasting...not all Muslims are like that
