There are a number of products including freeware that will do this for you. If you go to My Computer.... Right Click Properties....
Clcik Hardware....Click Device Manager
Anything you see with a red X thru it identifys a problem with some component.
Sometimes deleting that component and restarting the computer will cure the problem

Sounds like you have something that is not working correctly. Wish you had given some detail as to what was not working and what error(s) you are getting...

If you think it may be a driver, try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the item. If it is hardware, go into the control panel, the system icon, the hardware tab, and click the device manager. Find the hardware and right click on it and uninstall it. Reboot and it should reload the drivers.

If you think it is the cables, etc, try replacing the cable with another one (borrow from anothe PC for the test). Such as if you think the CD drive is bad, swap it with one from another computer. If the error follows the CD drive, the drive is bad. If the error stays with the PC, the drivers or configuration is bad.

It is basic trial and error, take a guess and see what works...
