Co Codamol usually come in doses of 8/500 or 30/500 all this means is the amount of codiene to the amount of paracetamol i.e: 8mg of codiene to 500mg of paracetamol. An overdose of paracetamol is dangerous and capable of causing serious damage to the liver and kidneys.

The body produces prostaglandins in response to injury and certain diseases. One of the effects of prostaglandins is to sensitise nerve endings, causing pain (presumably to prevent us from causing further harm to the area). As paracetamol reduces the production of these nerve sensitising prostaglandins it is thought it may increase our pain threshold, so that although the cause of the pain remains, we can feel it less.

Codeine is a stronger painkiller known as an opioid. Opioid painkillers work by mimicking the action of naturally occurring pain-reducing chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins are found in the brain and spinal cord and reduce pain by combining with opioid receptors.

Codeine mimicks the action of natural endorphins by combining with the opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. This blocks the transmission of pain signals sent by the nerves to the brain. Therefore, even though the cause of the pain may remain, less pain is actually felt.

If you have taken on overdose of these medications you should seek IMMEDIATE medical help as you run the risk of serious delayed liver and kidney damage even if you feel fine right now.

good luck

There are two different strenghts of co-codamol 8/500 or 30/500.
A lot depends on how your liver has dealt with the overdose. You may be lucky and nothing will happen. You make get mild pain in your liver area for a day or two...best to avoid alcohol if you don't want the pain to get worse.!Your kidneys could also be affected.
If you took them in the last 24 hours go and see the staff in the nearest A and E department.

Your doctor wouldn't have prescribed it if it was that risky, have a little faith in her competence. The risk of breathing problems comes from women taking more than what is prescribed for several weeks, which could definitely cause respiratory depression in the newborn, just like when adults take heroin and stop breathing and die from it. Narcotics contain a property which acts on the brain's area that controls the natural instinct to breathe, and decreases it's functioning. It takes quite a bit of narcotics to make this happen to either you or your child, so as long as you are only taking the med when necessary and not going beyond the prescribed does, you're fine.

Scientifically your liver is breaking down the chemicals and then your kidney's excrete it so it can't do any more damage.

Assuming you were trying to die - go to see your doctor they can give you pills and counselling to help your pain. I know everyone has said this but I have taken an overdose of paracetamol in the past, it didn't work, I went to my doctor, I'm on pills I've had 'talking therpy' and trust me it is all worth it.

You don't have to feel like that, there is a way out. If you want to talk email me at emilywood101 at yahoo dot co dot uk

You may have put yourself at risk of long term liver damage from the overdose of paracetamol that is in the co codamol.
The codeine will probably do you no harm.

You know you're more likely to get brain damage and live the rest of your life like a vegetable than die when you overdose
