I am in the middle of doing this right now with 7 English SPringer Spaniel puppies I am raising. The mom, when the pups are about 3-4 weeks old will start not feeding them as much because their little teeth are hurting her - she might even tend to avoid them a bit... we are using a good canned puppy food and blending it up in a blender until it is pureed and not chunky at all -- just feed it to them off of your fingers... they will get the idea really quick and basically be bathing in it, but thats ok. the momma will clean them up. We also heat it up just a bit in the microwave to get the chill out because the worst thing you can do is let the puppies get chilled and cold. Their digestive systems do not work properly when they are too cold. We started doing this a few times a day at about 3 weeks of age and they LOVE IT!!! I am not using the hard food right now because they really don't have the teeth for it. This also has all been under the recommendation of several veterinarians.

Do NOT add cows milk in there - can give them digestive problems!!

about 4 weeks i would start to mix a powder milk supplement until it gets soggy and they will eat it right up....at about 6 or 7 weeks make it a little more crunchy...Try Purina Puppy Chow and pick up the Milk Supplement at you Near by Pet Store

When they start growing teeth. Start them with baby cereal and then gradually give them puppy food

When they've been weaned. Puppies and kittens shouldn't be weaned before 10 weeks. Then they can have their shots and start on puppy/kitten food. Start them on soft, canned food until they start to lose their milk teeth...then they'll enjoy chewing on the dry food.

Puppies are best left til about 8 weeks old to start weaning them. Start with small meals often as their little tummies can't handle great amounts, try and buy a good quality dog food.. Buy some lactose free milk (longlife is fine) and dilute it for them. Lactose can harm a dog. My dog was raised this way and gradually weaned onto just dog biscuits and water. With treats and scraps. Also onions and chocolate are no good for dogs so avoid these. Happy puppy raising.

start trying them on solid food once their mother starts to wean them off milk. This is usually around one to two months old. You could also try just waiting until they won't stop pestering you for food!
