My son is turning 12 in November. He's told me a few things that he'd like but I'm not sure what to get because I don't want to disappoint him with my selection. Is it tacky to get a 12 yr old a gift card from one or two stores so he can pick something out himself? I do this for Christmas presents for adult friends but I'm not sure if that's okay for a child?

If he is 12 you would have to take him to the store anyway so just get him a card and put a nice slip of paper that you print out of the computer (make it look like a check or a dollar bill with your face on it) with a $ amount on it and tell him that is the amount you will spend on him.
remember gift cards have less real value than cash because you have to use them at THAT store. An IOU from mom is good anywhere!

Sure it is ok for a child. My son is 9 and loves getting gift cards for presents. This way there are no mistakes, he gets exactly what he wants and everyone is happy. Just make sure to get gift cards from stores that he like to go to.

I have a daughter like that, hard to buy for, (but she wont tell me what she wants). If your son has told you what he wants then I'd pick from that list, or an mp3 player is always a hit. I don't like gift cards to much, there so impersonal not tacky. Good luck And happy birthday to you son.

a boy that age might well go for a bb gun or slingshot, given the means, you might want to set some spending guidelines. Depends on how responsible the boy is though, really. Might be a good gift.

My son turns 14 on Nov. 8, and he wan'ts the newest IPOD thing a majig......I think its 4 gig and 199 dollars US....good luck

No a gift card is not a gift for you chid's age group.You can gift something which your son like the most.you can also gift him a nice book also.
