Do you mean a weapon able to be used in today's society with respect to today's laws or just in general without regard for the consequenses of walking around times square with an assault rifle, broadsword or escrima sticks?

I'm writing this list as if you are talking about modern day society and bieng able to walk around with it legally without drawing attention.

#1- If you have a CCW (carry lisence) then obviously a handgun. People have different preferences but whatever you can comfortably fire. A desert eagle concealed in your jacket would be overkill. If you don't have a carry license then your options are limited as walking around with a crossbow is a problem too. Throwing knives are probably your best bet, so long as they look like a utility knife that you can explain to a cop why you have it and say "for work".

#2 Obviously a knife. A good folding lock-blade type of knife is your best bet. Butterfly knives are illegal in most states and are crappy quality knives in general. Same with switchblades. If you train yourself to do it, you can open a folding knife quicker than someone can open a butterfly knife anyway. A folding knife will avoid detection and negative attention from the cops. While walking around with a larger blade might be more effective, you have to take into consideration that knives whose primary purpose is a weapon, are illegal (to be carried on the streets) in most states.

#3- Stick? Well if you are going to carry a short stick you can disguise it as a stickball bat, but you better carry a ball with you too or you will get funny looks. Realistically stillettos are illegal in most states so the best bet would be a small metal stick like a jutte that can be disguised as something not a weapon that you might logically have on you. A straight metal or hard plastic can double for it and can maybe serve some utilitarian purpose so you can get away with it. Besides it isn't as bad as carrying around a knife if you are carrying around a small metal stick for protection. Blades just tend to rub law enforcement the wrong way and you have a lot of explaining to do.

#4- A tazer if it is legal in your state, if not a stun gun (weaker version of tazer), or mace (if legal) if not then you are stuck with pepper spray but although it is untested, holding a naked picture of roseanne bhar naked up to someone's face will likely make thier face melt like in Raiders of the Lost Ark. However modern science has not built a camera strong enough to resist such pressure to take that image and not explode.

Your hands & feet. I have a friend who is a self defense instructor for an urban police dept. They teach that if an attack is initiated from within 12 feet, you will not have time to draw a weapon. This for cops who:
1) Are highly trained.
&
2) Carry their weaspons in the most accessable position.

Assuming that will not have the time or facilities to be as well trained as cops & that you will carry your weapon concealed, making it less accesable, you will need more time. Most attacks are initiated from close range. If the weapon is not already in your hand, it is useless.

Well if I could only choose a physical weapon my choice would be a police grade Taser Gun. We have one and I actually feel safe having it around.

My best defense is to run like mad and scream!!!

Well, I think that a persons best "personal weapon" is himself. Arms, legs, elbows, knees, and a knowledge on how to use them effectively.
