Beckenham is about 14km out of the city centre of Perth. It's just like any working class suburb really - families, blue-collar, pretty reasonable attitudes. It has access to a train station, so public transport shouldn't be that much of a problem. It's also close to a really big shopping centre called Westfield Carousel, which has cinemas and pubs and is close to major roads. People are OK for the most part.

Most homes are free standing on nice size blocks, so it's not a place where there's heaps of crammed in units with high density living. There's a few parks too because of the family factor. Surrounding suburbs are similar. There's also the greyhound racing another suburb over in Cannington if you like that sort of thing.

The downside is that if you like the beach, then you have a long way to go. Beckenham is inland and the beach is the other side of the city. The upside is, the train line should take you straight there in under an hour.

If you get there and decide it's not for you but still want the train line access without a too high price tag, I reckon you're better off trying Bayswater, Bassendean, Guildford and Woodbridge. They're areas that have been going through a refurbishment and are starting to have new infrastructure put in and attracting new wealth and young people in their 20s and 30s. Plus, there's a great local tavern at Woodbridge.

Hey, I live in Kenwick, one train station down from Beckenham. That said, I'm surprised you asked because the majority of users are American.

Nevertheless, well... You should ask your mate! Perth is a great place, that much I'm assured in, but there are greater places out there. Why don't you ask your mate if you can move in for a bit and see what life is like? Or just rent a house for a few months and see if you like it? I can't tell you what Beckenham is like because I've never really bothered to find out >.<
