Windows is the operating system that allows you to control the hardware of your PC (contains some basic applications like IE, OE, MediaPlayer etc). Office is an application suite and they are two separate packages. You can buy the individual applications in Office seperately to save money if you don't need the lot, also have a look at Works Suite which is cheaper and contains some of the same applications as Office.
However, advice from the guys above on the free alternatives are definitely worth looking into.

no, you have to buy a copy of microsoft office.

The windows XP disk comes with a 30 or 60 day trial of MS Office. But after that, you'll have to buy a copy of MS Office

XP doesn't ship with Office. Some vendors package an Office trial with their computers. If you want Office, try OpenOffice.org. It's an full-featured office suite like MS Office, only it's free! It can handle files created in MS Office, and you can save them in the OpenDocument format, which takes up half as much space as MS Office files take! The download for OpenOffice.org is 93MB, though. Get it at http://www.openoffice.org/ ;)

did you buy the machine made? if office was on the computer when it was bought new, they should have given you either the office disk (they often supply a reformat disk which would have all the original programs and drivers on it, excepting office, and it'll install them all at once rather than trying to remember them all and installing one by one)
