Thank you for this question.
Lailat ul Qadr means "night of power" in Arabic. It is the night that, during a retreat, the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) came to the prophet Muhammad (saw) the first time to deliver the message of God that we know as the Quran.
The exact date of this night is unkown to us. Even Prophet Muhammad (saw) when asked could not remember exactly which night it was but said to "look for it" on the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadhan. Therefore most devout Muslims will try and do extra prayers and stay up on those nights. There are signs that are told in the hadith that identify the night.
Some countries have given a specific date for Lailat ul Qadr and there is no harm in this except that one of the wonderful things of not really knowing is that the search is so uplifting to one's soul. So you benefit by seeking it out and increasing your faith and worship when you do not know the exact date but spend your time in the practices that connect you with God.
I hope this helps you, and I hope you will spend your time, in these last days of Ramadhan this year in a true spiritual quest to make that connection, insha'allah!
And Allah knows best.
Peace and Blessings,
Salim

Salam Aisha. Well I think it was 2 days ago but I can't be sure. Next Ramadan, start praying from the beginning of the last ten days. The day you wake up and see the sun with no rays around it would have been lailat ul qadr before. Hope that's helpful. 3eed sa3eed... ;)

The Prophet (p) asked you to search for it in the odd nights of the last 10 days of Ramadan.
Anyone who gives you a definitive date will answer to Allah.

If only allah the imaginary god of the desert knows, you have a problem, 'cos the non-existent can't tell us very much of anything. Just starve yourself whenever you feel like it. It achieves nothing anyway, except to help you lose weight.

It's Thursday.
--------------------
edit: Wow. Bizarre. My answer is getting thumbs-down and people are saying I will 'answer to Allah' for giving a definite date.
I'm not Muslim but I live in Turkey and it appears on all calendars as tomorrow, 19 October 2006... Geesh, sorry for trying to share what knowledge I might happen to have...
