i think u dont want to make a remote controled car at first.
thats a easy thing to start with.
i think here is some thing u should buy first.:
Two motors ( prob. 500 RPM)
Wheels : 2
A castor wheel: wheel that can rotate whole 360 deg.
hangman wire( wire strip)
Two DPDT (those r two ways switches.
a total of 12 V. the compination is up to u!

Construction of the car.
what i suggest for the first tim eis u make a tri car.
two motorised wheels at the back and a casto r in front.
12 V u can mount on ur remote.
now for the connections:
remem this is for just one motor.
for the other one do the same using another DPDT
look at the DPDT. it got 3 pins. i ll say 2 pins in 3rows.
i will name the pins as (1,1),(,1,2),(2,1),(2,2),(3,1),(3,2)
1,1 shorted with 3,2 : one of the 12 v terminal
1,2 shorted with 3,1 : the other terminal
2,2 one of the wire from motor
2,1 : another wire of motor.

connect the diff. DPDT with the II motor. u will use same 12V
now hit one of the DPDT forward and u will see it moving. hit it other way n see it rotating the other way.
mount ur motors on the car base.
u can make base from ply wood or metal plates.

I hope i hav made quite clear the making.
So best of luck for ur car.
And do sak any other prob.
do also tell me hows ur car do in whatever race u r takin part.
keep racing
bye
