As mentioned before you need The Soil Association logo on the food.
Organic food is usually unserstood to have been grown or reared without the use of pesticides/growth hormones and other "un-natural" products. This not only goes for the actual item itself but also for the soil it is grown in or reared on.

Good question, the organic market is a big grey industry. growers and manufacturers can get away with a lot and we wouldn't know. there has been a big movement lately to try and regulate it. look for certified organic and try to buy reputable serious brands

If it looks ugly, it maybe organic, its virtually impossible to grow a perfect veg without using something unnatural. Flavour comes from the breed, try Vivaldi or Picasso potatoes, we grow 500 acres inorganic and these two taste wonderfull, just like the old times and you need no butter when you mash'em.

You will know by the taste. Try a normal tomato and then try an organic tomato. As per one of the other answers you are likely to find insects in the veg too.

dear, organic means that no pesticides or chemicals were used in growing or processing of some food. whenever i buy veggies, i look for some holes on the leaves of the veggies (not the worst type though), for me it means that some insects actually "stayed" on the plant, meaning there are no pesticide residues on the vegetable.
