I asked my veteran father that once, and was told it was "Ham that flunked the physical". It is popular here in Korea as well- in fact they give each other Spam gift packs for the holidays. It's three times the price it is in the States, and they put it in all sorts of things. I understand it gained popularity after WW2 because refrigeration and electricity, as well as meat were scarce commodities for the average person. SPAM was affordable, it sat on the shelf, and technically- it is meat. They acquired the taste, and it's just stayed on. It's just one of those foods you grow up eating as a kid. It's not currently in vogue, like bologna- but the supermarkets don't seem to have any problem moving it off the shelf and out the door, do they?

SPAM [supposed acronym for SPICES & HAM] is everything else that butchers don't usually sell in their shop. It's unwanted--though edible--meat that is grinded up and processed into that wonderful pink, canned meat.

I don't know why it's popular, my only guess is that it has been a part of the Aloha State even before it became a State, but I lived in Hawaii for more than 10 years and I loved eating Spam Musubi--Spam on top of rice and wrapped in seaweed.

Hawaii and Guam, I think, are the largest consumers of the cured meat.

spam is when people mass email a bunch of other
people to scam them into buying their product or going
to their website. It is popular in Hawaii because Japanese
people like it.

It's one of those things that taste better if you don't think so much of what it is. It is delicious fried. Not so fond of it not cooked. My husband loves it anyway, with anything. I'll just continue to think of it as SPiced hAM, and believe it grows on trees. No animals were harmed in the making!

Spam is a fusion of nasty crap you wouldn't otherwise eat in its original form. It is just like sausages, but they put a lot more lard and inedible parts because they are CHEAP BASTARDS. That's probably why you like it! Don't believe it when when they say it is just ham and pork shoulder! Don't forget testicles, scrotum, cartilage, and rectum!
